Crunchfish Governed Offline featured in Bank of England Digital Pound Lab final results

The Bank of England has published its final outputs from Phase 2 of the Digital Pound Lab, which included Crunchfish’s proof of concept for offline payments as one of the participant use cases. The work demonstrates how Crunchfish’s Governed Offline Payments can add resilience to a potential digital pound infrastructure by enabling payments to continue offline.

Crunchfish developed an offline payments proof of concept demonstrating a Reserve, Pay and Settle lifecycle as a layer on top of the Digital Pound Lab infrastructure. The solution demonstrates offline payments at point of sale, followed by online reconciliation, together with security controls designed to mitigate the risk of double spending.

The Bank of England has now published the final Phase 2 outputs, including a demonstration video of Crunchfish’s solution. The Digital Pound Lab explored how a potential digital pound could support innovative retail payment services, with practical experimentation covering areas including offline payments, cash interoperability, trade finance, programmable payments and digital verification.
